Advanced Docking and Med Mooring Techniques

Different areas in the world use different anchoring and docking techniques. Areas with space such as the Whitsundays tend to use techniques such as swinging at anchor. This utilises quite a large area and fewer yachts can fit into an anchorage.

In tighter confines such as the small bays in the Mediterranean area, often with extremely deep waters surrounding the bays, the option for swing mooring is not practical. Hence the various techniques known as Med Mooring are more popular and used. In fact it can be quite rude to swing at anchor in one of these bays, essentially preventing others safe shelter of the small bays.

Our advanced docking and mooring classes addresses these techniques specifically. We run these classes only 4 times a year or on demand for private students.

This is an intensive two day course, due to the nature of the techniques we cannot teach it in a day. We have chosen 3 areas around Sydney where we practice these techniques.

The course is designed to give you the confidence to use the techniques in a variety of different conditions and avoid the basic mistakes many make. Maximum 4 students.

Techniques covered:

  • Preparing yacht for approach
  • Sterning into an marina berth laying the anchor
  • Sterning into a bay laying anchor and running stern lines ashore
  • Throwing lines effectively
  • Manoeuvering in tight confines
  • Using a dinghy to run lines ashore
  • Untangling crossed anchor chains (common problem)
  • Knots to tie two unequal lengths of line
  • more

Prerequisites:
Completion of Docking, Berthing and MOB for ICC
This course forms part of the IYT Coastal Yacht Master certificate and builds experience for those heading the the Med.
